Take a step back in time to a much simpler cottage life. Classic Lake Muskoka, this 3 bedroom cottage on Browning Island, sits nestled in the woods, tucked into a quiet bay with over 260 ft. of water frontage. It is just a 5 minute boat ride from the mainland to this cottage. This extremely well maintained cottage has been in the family since it was built 80 years ago, and it has been lovingly handed down from generation to generation.
The interior has cedar wood floors throughout, and the walls and ceilings are all tongue and groove pine, not a hint of drywall to be found anywhere. The bedrooms are bright and spotless and comfortably furnished with the living room as their hub. Although the kitchen and dining area are located in the back of the cottage overlooking the woods, the sun pours through the dining room windows in the morning, and when the sun sets through a gap up the bedrock in the evening the kitchen is flooded with late day light. Day or night, settle into the screened-in Muskoka room at the front of the cottage to escape from the heat and catch up on your reading while taking in beautiful views of the lake (there is also a wing table in the dining room that can easily be moved to the Muskoka room for lakeview dining).
As warm and inviting as the cottage is, there are several hundred acres of nature preserve to be explored in the centre of the island by just walking off the back of the property (don’t forget a compass!). Birds are in abundance (owls, chickadees, phoebes, woodpeckers, hummingbirds, herons and many more). And what better way to become one with nature after a long day of exploring than enjoying the unique “tree house” open shower!
It is a short and gently sloped walk down to the dock where the natural shoreline is rocky with mixed vegetation. The deer are known to wander by for a drink at the lake in the early morning and the loons are always a guaranteed presence. Away from the car traffic and minimal boat traffic, the bay is very sheltered so except in stormy weather, the water is very flat and gentle. The sun is plentiful on the dock from 8 in the morning until 5 in the evening and the water at the end of the dock is 5 ft. deep, ideal for shallow diving and cooling off.
Finally, take full advantage of boating from this property as you can tour “The Big Three” (Lake Muskoka, Lake Joseph and Lake Rosseau). The lake also hosts frequent fishing derbies so needless to say avid fishermen won’t be disappointed. The rich cottage history of vacationing on this famous lake is sure to please the whole family!
