Everything Cottage Owners Need to Know About the New STR Licensing By-Law in Muskoka Lakes

If you own a cottage in the Township of Muskoka Lakes and use it as a short-term rental (STR), changes are on the horizon. Starting January 1, 2025, new licensing requirements will come into effect, impacting how cottages are rented out in this picturesque region.

Here’s what you need to know to stay compliant and keep your cottage rental running smoothly.

What Is Short-Term Rental (STR) Licensing?

Short-term rentals are defined as any rental lasting less than 28 days. Under the new by-law, these rentals will require township approval in the form of an annual license.

The licensing process is designed to regulate STRs, ensuring they meet safety standards and operate responsibly within the community.

Key Details for Cottage Owners

  • Effective Date: The by-law comes into effect on January 1, 2025. You’ll have until July 1, 2025, to obtain your license.
  • Licensing Fee: The annual licensing fee is $1,000.
  • Annual Renewal: Licenses must be renewed each year, and the township may impose restrictions on rental properties, such as limits on the number of bedrooms or maximum occupancy.
  • Inspections: The township reserves the right to inspect properties during rental periods.

At Cottage Vacations, we’re here to make the licensing process easier for you. As your trusted rental agency, we can act as your “Responsible Person.” This means we’ll serve as the primary point of contact with the township during rentals and ensure guests sign the Renter’s Code of Conduct upon arrival.
