Welcome to this lovely 1,200 sq. ft., 3 bedroom classic Muskoka cottage, tucked into a half acre of well-treed land on the tranquil shores of Bird Lake. The current owners purchased the cottage in 1997 after looking at dozens of cottages over the summer months. When they came to this one on a warm August afternoon and walked down to the lake, a calm peaceful feeling swept over them, and as they stood on the shore looking out over the expansive and beautiful bay, they knew instantly that they had finally found “their” cottage. At one time, a family of brothers and a sister owned all the land around the six kilometre perimeter of Bird Lake. They sold the properties and built each of the original cottages. The wood to build the cottages came from the surrounding forest and was milled just up the road and there is a new heritage museum on Birdlake Road that pays homage to the logging history in the area.
This cottage was built in the 1970’s on the quieter part of the lake. Part of its charm is the exposed, rough-cut two by eight beams in the great room. The owners slowly renovated each room in the cottage, doing their best to retain the original cottage charm. The patchwork of carpeting that used to cover the main room was replaced with pine laminate and trim. The main bathroom and kitchen have been fully updated and the walls of each bedroom have been stripped down to studs, reinsulated and repainted.
In 2009, they added the upstairs loft and it was designed to be big enough for the ping pong table that stands ready for all challengers! With the windows open and fan on, the loft is their favourite place to watch a movie sprawled out on the futon couches and the carpeted floor, or maybe even to watch a summer storm moving over the lake. You will also find an assortment of board games, puzzles and books to while away the hours on inclement days.
Muskoka’s fresh air, rock and water is what will keep you coming back. There is nothing better than floating in the lake on a pool noodle staring up at the blue skies and huge pine, maple and oak trees. You can walk-in at the shoreline making it easy to go for a swim or paddle on a kayak or paddle board. Water shoes and/or a pool noodle are the best for those who like to wade in past the end of the dock as the water quickly gets deeper and cooler after the boulders submerged just off the shore.
Bird Lake is one of the best places to go bass fishing. Spend countless hours fishing in the small row boat, it’s no secret that this part of the lake has the best fishing! The biggest fish are often caught in the row boat right in front of the cottage, just cast your line in front of the submerged boulders or the lily pads. Most fish are caught between six to nine at night by the weeds at the east end of the lake. Dawn and dusk are also the best time to be on the water to see the resident beavers, loons and herons.
With so much to offer you at this family vacation get away, the owner's greatest hope is that you take away a memorable experience that fills your hearts!
